What is Amzn-SearchBot?

Amzn-SearchBot is Amazon's search crawler: it indexes pages for search results. In Amazon's words:

“Amzn-SearchBot is used to improve search experiences in Amazon products and services.”

“Amzn-SearchBot does not crawl content for generative AI model training.”

“If robots.txt files don’t mention Amzn-SearchBot but allow other search bots, Amzn-SearchBot will crawl in accordance with the robots.txt directives given to other search bots.”

Amzn-SearchBot user agent string

Amazon documents this user agent string for Amzn-SearchBot:

Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; Amzn-SearchBot/0.1) Chrome/W.X.Y.Z Safari/537.36

In robots.txt, use the token Amzn-SearchBot, not the full string. Crawlers match on the token, and version numbers in the full string can change.

How to block Amzn-SearchBot in robots.txt

Add this group to the robots.txt file at the root of your domain to block Amzn-SearchBot from your whole site:

User-agent: Amzn-SearchBot
Disallow: /

To block only part of your site, list those paths instead:

User-agent: Amzn-SearchBot
Disallow: /private/

A group that names Amzn-SearchBot replaces your User-agent: * rules for it entirely (RFC 9309). If your catch-all group blocks paths that Amzn-SearchBot should also stay out of, repeat them in its group. To let Amzn-SearchBot in while a catch-all rule blocks others:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

User-agent: Amzn-SearchBot
Allow: /

“Automated crawling from these listed user agents respects the Robots Exclusion Protocol, honoring the user-agent and the allow/disallow directives.”

What happens if you block Amzn-SearchBot?

“By permitting Amzn-SearchBot access to your website, your content is eligible to appear in search experiences such as Alexa.”

How to verify requests from Amzn-SearchBot

Amazon publishes the IP addresses Amzn-SearchBot uses. Check a request's IP address against that list before trusting its user agent, which any client can fake.
